The Challenge

Our initial Kickstarter campaigns for this science fiction miniatures wargame were so popular that we followed up with this huge source book, featuring full rules for the game, and 200 pages of brand-new content: diagrams of ships, a catalog of the various miniatures, and tons of world-building fiction.

The real challenge was that this was twice as long as most of the previous books we had published, most had not been written nor did much of the art exist before the Kickstarter launch . . . but I still needed to hit the print deadline so that we could get the book to the backers as promised.

Because some of the content was at best theoretical at launch, I designed the book with a rigid grid so that I could plug in text and art as it came in.
I also designed it so that each segment had a different look and feel, to make it clear to even the casual reader that there were different types of content throughout the book.

In the end it meant a lot of long days and working closely (and remotely) with the art director, writers, and editors involved with this project, but we met our deadlines and had thousands of happy customers.
