The Challenge

Our initial Warcaster Kickstarter campaigns for this science fiction wargame were so popular that we followed up with this huge source book, featuring full rules for the game, and almost 200 pages of brand-new content: diagrams of ships and armor, painting instructions for the miniatures, a catalog of the various troops released, and tons of world-building fiction.

The real challenge was that this book was twice as long as most of the previous books we had published, most of it had not been written nor did much of the art exist before the Kickstarter launch . . . but I still needed to hit the print deadline so that we could get the book to the Kickstarter backers when we promised.

Because some of the content was at best theoretical at launch, I designed the book with a rigid grid so that I could plug in text and art as it came in.
I also designed it so that each segment had a different look and feel, to make it clear to even the casual reader that there were different types of content throughout the book.

In the end it meant a lot of long days and coordinating remotely with the writers, editors, and art directors involved with this project, but we met our deadlines and had thousands of happy customers.
