The Challenge

When Covid hit, Privateer Press pivoted from in-person gaming to role-playing games (which could be played remotely), which also is what the company was founded on 20 years before.

The initial books were a reboot for the game, giving overall details of the setting and updating the system to adhere to the 5e rules of the world’s most popular role-playing game, which can't be named for legal reasons.

My design had to work not only with the 5e system that players were familiar with, but also evoke the world the books are set in: ancient steam-punk mixed with magic, with different cultures fighting against each other.
The design is a mixture of rusted gears and stained parchment to go with the setting, and rigid stylesheets so that everything was formatted as players would expect, and so that all of the books could be quickly laid out to meet some rather compressed deadlines.

And our experiment worked! We made our goal on Kickstarter in just over an hour, and we've had many highly-successful KS campaigns since.
